The 23-year-0ld lost her left eye and left hand after accidentally walking into a spinning plane propeller on Dec. 3. Since the injury she has been undergoing extensive rehab at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation in Dallas.
The photos, released by Good Morning America, were taken as she was leaving the hospital with her parents on Tuesday. There is a patch over her left eye socket and the sleeve of her jackets hangs where her left hand should be.
According to her mother Cheryl Scruggs’, Lauren has had to relearn how to walk, talk and dress herself, but is making tremendous progress.
“It is just plain hard to watch Lo come to grips with the fact that she has lost her hand and lost her eye,” she wrote on her blog. “It’s hard to hear her tears.”
Scruggs was injured during a plane ride over Dallas to see Christmas lights.
The pilot of the plane claims in a federal report that he tried to warn Scruggs about the dangers of the propeller and have her walk behind the plane as she exited. When he thought she was out of danger he went back to his seat, and then heard someone scream, “Stop, stop.” He turned off the engine and saw the model lying on the ground.
“Upon noticing that she was exiting in front of the strut, the pilot leaned out of his seat and placed his right hand and arm in front of her to divert her away from the front of the airplane and the propeller,” the report reads. “He continued to keep his arm extended and told the passenger that she should walk behind the airplane.”
It is not clear if Scruggs just didn’t listen to the pilot’s warning or if she didn’t hear it over the loud engine.
